Billing Cycle Cut by 10 Days Through SAP ISU Smart Metering
Brownfield SAP ISU implementation replacing conventional meters with smart metering and automated meter reads
Company Overview
A utility company that generates, transmits, and distributes electrical power, supplying residents, businesses, and industry across its region. The organization plays a central role in the area's energy infrastructure and had set out to modernize how it reads and bills for electricity consumption.
Before: Conventional Meters and Manual Reading Processes
- Conventional meters required manual reading, which slowed the billing cycle and introduced errors into consumption data.
- Inventory distribution and device certification for new meters ran through a model that was more complex than it needed to be.
- Device management issues consumed significant staff hours to investigate and resolve.
- Reporting gave limited forward visibility, making it difficult to forecast for upcoming periods.
The Solution
An end-to-end brownfield implementation replaced conventional meters with smart meters and configured them within SAP ISU, including the interface to the system operator for meter reads. The work drew on domain expertise across SAP ISU device management, location management, contract accounts receivable and payable, and business intelligence in a utility and public sector context. Inventory management, plant maintenance, installation, meter reading, and inspection processes were implemented to industry best practice, the inventory distribution model and meter shop certification process were simplified, migration workbench uploads were built to move master data across, and both the extract and load layer and the reporting layer were enhanced.
After: Faster Billing, Accurate Reads, Real-Time Insight
- Billing cycle reduced by 10 days.
- Smart meter readings captured without errors, removing the manual reading step from the process entirely.
- Real-time reporting and analytics across the business, including forecasting for upcoming periods.
- Simplified inventory distribution and device certification at the meter shop for new smart meter inventory.
- Master data migrated cleanly into the new landscape using purpose-built upload processes.
Efficiency Gains
- 25% reduction in staff hours spent on device management issues.
- Ten days removed from the billing cycle, accelerating cash collection.
- Meter reading moved from a manual field process to an automated interface with the system operator.
- Forecasting capability established through reporting and analytics that were not previously available.
