The number nobody can produce on demand
Ask an SAP team how many custom objects are in their production system and you will get an estimate. Ask which of those still run unchanged on S/4HANA, which nothing has called in three years, and what each one costs to remediate, and the honest answer is that finding out is itself a project.
That gap is where S/4HANA programmes go wrong. Budgets get approved against an estimate. The estimate turns out to be a guess. Scope moves, dates move, and the conversation with the board becomes about why the number changed rather than about the transformation.
A landscape assessment closes the gap before the money is committed. Not a sampled survey of representative objects, but every object, read and scored.
What the agents read
The assessment works on the code and the metadata, not on your business data. Agents extract and analyse your custom ABAP repository, the enhancements and user exits layered onto standard SAP, your interfaces and integration points, your custom tables and data dictionary objects, and the runtime statistics that show what is actually being executed rather than what merely exists.
From that they build a dependency map. This is the part manual assessments rarely get to, because tracing what calls what across a fifteen-year-old estate is exactly the kind of tedious, exhaustive work a person runs out of patience for and software does not. It is also the part that determines sequencing: you cannot retire an object that something you are keeping still calls.
What you get back
A scored inventory of every custom object, classified as compliant, needs remediation, or retire. A readiness rating for the estate as a whole, with the specific blockers named. Effort and cost attached to each object needing work, so the total is built up from evidence rather than divided down from a budget. A dependency map showing what has to move together. And a recommended migration path, brownfield, greenfield or selective transition, with the reasoning stated, because the right answer depends on what the assessment found rather than on a preference.
The output is designed to survive a board meeting. If someone asks why the remediation estimate is what it is, the answer is a list of objects, not a methodology.
Why this comes before the migration decision
Most organisations choose their migration path first and discover their custom code second. That order is backwards, and it is expensive. Brownfield looks attractive until the assessment shows that a large share of your custom code will not survive the conversion. Greenfield looks clean until you find the integrations nobody documented that the business depends on daily.

What assessments tend to surface
Three patterns come up in almost every estate we assess.
- Dead code is larger than anyone expects. A substantial share of custom objects have not been executed in years. Every one of those is remediation effort you can decline to spend.
- The expensive objects are not the obvious ones. Remediation cost concentrates in a small number of deeply-enhanced programs, not evenly across the repository.
- Performance problems are already visible. The same analysis that finds S/4HANA blockers finds the anti-patterns behind slow reports, which is why assessment and optimization are usually bought together.

How long does an assessment take?
Days for the analysis itself, then a review pass with our architects before anything is handed over. The variable is scoping and system access, not the scan.Do you need access to our production system?

Why another?
Compare the two on coverage. Most conventional assessments sample representative objects and extrapolate, because reading everything by hand is not practical. If yours scored every object with effort attached, you may not need this. If it gave you a percentage and a range, you have an estimate rather than an inventory.What if the answer is that we should not migrate yet?
