The gap between the plan and the result
In most finance functions the budget lives in spreadsheets and the actuals live in a reporting tool. The two meet once a month, by hand, and the reconciliation is somebody's week. Every restructure of the cost centre hierarchy breaks the mapping, and the variance report arrives late enough that it describes history rather than informing a decision.
SAP Analytics Cloud exists to close that gap. Plan and actual sit in one model against one hierarchy, so a variance is a calculation rather than a reconciliation exercise. That is the part organizations underuse, and it is usually where the return is.
Live connection or import, and why the choice matters
SAC can read your SAP data live, with no copy made, or import it into its own store. This is not a detail to leave to whoever installs it.
A live connection means there is one version of the data, and the authorizations a user already has in S/4HANA follow them into the report. Nothing is duplicated, so nothing drifts. The constraint is that modelling flexibility is limited by what the source exposes.
An import connection gives you freedom to blend, reshape and combine with non-SAP sources, at the cost of a second copy that now has its own refresh schedule and its own security model to maintain. Both are legitimate. Choosing without understanding the trade is how organizations end up maintaining a shadow warehouse they never meant to build.
Planning, properly
Driver-based planning is where SAC stops being a reporting tool. Headcount drives payroll, volume drives cost of goods, and a change to an assumption reflows the plan rather than triggering a round of spreadsheet surgery. Versions let you hold a budget, a forecast and a stress case side by side. Allocations and workflow mean the numbers arrive from the people who own them, with an audit trail of who changed what.
